Wobbly Adventures
Wobbly Adventures is a 3D platformer I developed in Unreal Engine, featuring unique mechanics, level design, character creation, and a fully integrated HUD and audio.
Role: Game Designer | Developer
Tools Used: Unreal Engine, Mixamo, Quixel Bridge, Various Asset Packs
Overview:This is a small game demo I created as part of a challenge to build a complete game in Unreal Engine within one week. The goal was not perfection, but to create a fully playable game that included a start, an end, escalating challenges, and the essential elements of level design, sound effects, visual effects, menus, and a HUD.
My Contributions:
Storyboarding & Narrative Framework:
Developed a basic narrative to drive the game, ensuring a clear direction and focus for the level design and player experience.
Level Design & Mechanics:
Designed levels using basic geometry and introduced a unique floating mechanic tied to a progress bar to add complexity beyond simple jumping and running.
Character Creation & Animation:
Implemented the player character through Mixamo, integrating basic animations to bring the character to life in the game world.
Asset Gathering & Visual Enhancement:
Used a base asset pack, supplemented with assets from Quixel Bridge, to enhance the game’s aesthetics while maintaining a cohesive visual style.
Iterative Level Design & Playtesting:
Continuously refined levels by incorporating moving platforms and obstacles, balancing challenge and progression through playtesting.
Platform Programming & Interaction:
Programmed interactive platforms and obstacles to create engaging gameplay, ensuring smooth functionality through testing and adjustments.
Pickup Implementation & HUD Design:
Added pickups such as coins and boosts, with custom effects. Designed and implemented a HUD to display player stats and allow for easy navigation.
Audio Integration:
Integrated sound effects for actions like jumping and landing, as well as background music to enhance gameplay, culminating in a satisfying ending.
Reflection & Learnings:
Acknowledged the challenges of time management and scope, but was satisfied with the completion of the game, noting areas for further enhancement.
Continuous Learning:
The project served as an opportunity to apply game development principles in a short timeframe, refining skills and preparing for more complex future projects.
Impact & Results:The challenge taught me how to prioritize essential elements of game design and development within tight deadlines. Wobbly Adventures is a complete, functional game, demonstrating my ability to deliver a full experience with all necessary components, while keeping scope manageable and embracing the learning process.
